Women often are more comfortable taking up something new in the company of other women. This is true for almost everyone – when we are doing something new, we like to have the comfort of being around others who are in our “comfort zone.” If you’re really interested in trying out fly fishing, find a couple of other friends and convince them to start with you.

Seek out a women’s fly fishing club. There are a growing number of clubs where the primary focus is on teaching women how to fly fish, while enjoying the fellowship of other women. In this way, there is less fear of feeling intimidated by men who have been tying flies and casting to fish for years, and think they know better than everyone else.

Professional Lessons

Be sure to seek out lessons from a qualified fly casting instructor. Getting the basics down right will give you a lot more confidence when you are out on the water, and with this confidence will come less feelings of intimidation. Fly fishing really is a wonderful sport that can be enjoyed by anyone, and it’s not that difficult to learn. However, a few lessons from an instructor will jump start your casting skills, and you will be well on your way to winning informal fishing competitions with your male partner while feeling completely comfortable tying on flies and casting to rising fish 40 feet away.

Most men really would love it if their wives or girlfriends joined them on their fly fishing trips. Although if you head out with your husband and his buddies, you might feel a bit singled out as the only woman on the trip. However, in your husband’s eyes, you will be his hero and his friends will feel quite envious that you decided to come when their wives would not.

Not only that, but enjoying hobbies together will enhance your relationship and fly angling can be a lot of fun when husbands and wives enjoy the moments together.
