Coarse Fishing Tackle Review: Hardy Marksman Specialist 12′ Feeder Rod

If you’re anything like me, then you know that shopping for and buying coarse fishing tackle can be almost as much fun as using it. Coarse fishermen are particularly challenged in their tackle selection, because they stalk so many different fish species. This means that their gear must be as versatile and adaptable as possible. One feeder rod I’m particularly fond of comes from industry leader Hardy: the Marksman Specialist 12′ feeder rod. Read on for my take on this quality rod.

About the Hardy Marksman Specialist 12′ Feeder Rod

Although somewhat expensive at about £349.00, this rod is worth the investment. You’ll find yourself reaching for it often, because of its superior design and flawless performance. To be honest, I do prefer a longer quiver tip rod, so this 12′ Hardy is perfect for me. Crafted from a super high modulus carbon blank, the rod has superior casting power. A high modulus rod tends to be more sensitive, lighter, faster and stiffer — all qualities that I prefer. The best high modulus rods will have a progressive and smooth anti-lock rod action. This allows the angler plenty of flexibility in the types of tackle he uses with the rod. Note, however, that high modulus rods do tend to be somewhat more brittle.

Features and Functions of the Hardy 12′ Feeder Rod

If you’re out for hard-fighting fish like barbel and carp, this rod is more than equal to the task, providing superior power and control. The Hardy 12′ is an incredibly versatile rod that can be used in a good variety of fishing venues, including rivers and still waters. I’ve found it to have a superior reserve of casting power, no matter where I use it. This allows me to use many different types of feeders. In addition, a wide choice of hook lengths and reel lines can be used with the Hardy 12′ feeder rod. I particularly like that it comes with 2 oz., 3 oz. and 4 oz. carbon quiver tips, but softer tips are available to buy separately if you want them. Supplied with a rugged, protective Corduraâ„¢ tube, the rod also has aluminium stoppers and a screw down hood.

About the Anodised Reel Seat

The Hardy Marksman Specialist 12′ feeder rod features a custom designed anodised aluminium reel seat, an option that makes it quite durable. Anodisation is an electrochemical process that hardens aluminium, making it 30% harder than stainless steel. The metal resists abrasion and corrosion quite well, along with being supremely durable. The finish is bonded to the metal on the molecular level, so it never will peel or chip. Anodised metals are completely non-toxic, chemically stable, non-porous and ultra-smooth. For these reasons, an anodised reel seat will have a much longer life span than a non-anodised one.

The Hardy Marksman Specialist 12′ feeder rod is a superior piece of coarse fishing tackle every angler should consider. I’m pleased to recommend it without hesitation.
