A species related to the salmon, the trout is an oily fish that survives in fresh and salt water. Large in size, it can be used in game fishing and is rich in protein and healthy fat. Lures which are of two types, the natural and artificial, are needed to help catch the fish making use of a fishing line with a hook.

Natural lures, found in the local trout fishing supplies shop, include bait fish, insects and crustaceans that can be caught in the trout’s environment. Securing these natural lures can take-up a lot of one’s time and although available in the supplies shop, may entail some expense.

Artificial flies were fashioned to do away with the difficulty of producing natural lures which are simply feathers, fur, hair or anything similar to the natural lure that is fastened to a hook. One sure way to learn about trout fishing is to search the web for trout fishing books. Reading is the fastest way to get information about a subject one wants to know. These books available in the market are authored by writers who are much travelled and who can professionally do what they have written about.

The reader can be sure that the data he gets from the books is first-hand information about the trout. Fishing is a very popular hobby, and for good reason. You can relax, let your blood pressure drop, get a sun tan, and maybe even have a little excitement by reeling in a lot of fish. Oh, and let us not forget about the health benefits associated with eating fish. There is good protein and omega 3 fatty acids as well. However, if you do a lot of fishing, you may have noticed that the cost of bait is a recurring one. This money that you spend on bait could easily be used for something else like a new fishing pole or gas to get to your favorite fishing spot. You can cut this cost dramatically, and possible even completely, by catching your own bait.

Before you go out and start taking all of the bait you can, consult your fishing regulations book. This book will tell you what methods of taking bait are legal in your state and how much of certain types of bait you are allowed. Following these rules helps to keep things fair for everyone and ensure that the baitfish populations do not experience a drop due to excessive bait taking.

Once you know the rules, you can start loading up on bait. One of the easiest types of bait to catch is nightcrawlers. These are basically just large worms, but they only come out at night. To catch them, go outside when it gets dark and walk around with a flashlight, checking the ground for worms. You will see them lying on top of the grass. When you see one, quickly move the light away and grab it. You will have to be careful to slowly pull it out if its hole as you do not want to rip it in half.

Another easy type of bait to catch is the minnow. You can go to a local bait shop or sporting goods store and buy what is called a seine net. This is basically just a square with fine mesh netting. Using it is simple. You find a school of minnows, throw the net beyond them, and just pull it through. You will have a lot of minnows, but only take as many as you are allowed.
