Christmas Fishing 2010
Believe it or not, but I completed my holiday shopping on Monday. That’s right, it’s done and almost a week before Christmas. This feat is amazing considering that I am a compulsive Christmas Eve shopper.
But before anyone takes away my man card for not staying with the customary male code of last minute shopping, let me explain.
I, like most men, absolutely hate the holiday shopping season that seems to kickoff at 3AM on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Each weekend and the week leading up to December 25th all retail shopping centers and malls are packed with people. And with people come long lines, packed parking lots and traffic.
Additionally, if you attend one of these events with your significant other, be prepared to be there a while, a long while. How many times do they really have to go through the sales rack anyway?
Furthermore, men also have the pressure of getting the perfect gift for their female counterparts. I’ve tried the gift card thing, but that was met with opposition because “it didn’t seem to be thoughtful enough.” So men, make sure to pay extra attention to her conversation in the weeks before Christmas to eliminate the bewilderment in your shopping efforts.
Anyway, due to major cold fronts hitting the Texoma area on weekends over the past month, I spent less time on the water and actually went shopping. I also have a fishing trip planned for three days this week that added motivation to get it done early. I do have to confess that I really like shopping… only at fishing type stores..
Texoma Bass Club held their last tournament of the year last weekend. The fishing was a little tough as only three limits were caught. Garry Wells took first place in the contest with five fish weighing 13.68 pounds. Joey Cantrell and I came up just short with our second place finish of 13.24 pounds. Big bass of the tournament was a 3.96 pound smallmouth caught by Todd Lowry. On a good note almost every team weighed-in a smallmouth as there were several in the 3 pound fish brought to the scales.
Water temperature this weekend range from a morning low of 47 degrees to an afternoon high of 51 degrees. The anglers divulged catching fish early in the morning on main lake points throwing crank-baits and jerk-baits. Rocks and wind on these points made these areas productive. Later in the day as the temperatures warmed, bass were caught in brush with soft plastics and jigs.
The jigging spoon bite that I talked about earlier this month was slow. Some of the contestants caught a few small fish on these lures, but no big fish were caught. As winter progresses and the fish set up in deep water, I do expect that the jigging spoons will be more productive.
For those anglers that fish Lake Moss in Gainesville; Honey Hole All Outdoors with Bill Wilcox will air a show that was filmed on December 9th this weekend. The show comes on Fox Sports Southwest on Saturday mornings at 5:30 AM.
I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Remember what is important this time of year and why we celebrate this holiday.
